According to the Federal Statistical Office, output in the goods-producing sector rose by 0.5% in March compared with the preceding month. Industrial production rose by 0.4 %. Construction output grew by 1.0%.

The first quarter saw output in the goods-producing industry increase by 0.5% compared with the preceding quarter. In the same period, construction recorded a strong expansion (+3.9%), whilst industry saw a slight decline (-0.1%). The automotive industry did boost its output by 0.4% in the first quarter, but still fell well short of the level of production seen at the beginning of last year.

In addition to the slow industrial expansion, new domestic and foreign orders were also strikingly softer in the first quarter. The business climate in the manufacturing sector deteriorated further. It therefore seems likely that the industrial sector will remain sluggish in the coming months. In contrast, the construction industry has been reporting sharp rises in output since the beginning of the year, and is continuing to boom.
