Georg Graf Waldersee, the Federal Government’s Special Commissioner for Gas Transit through Ukraine, will travel tomorrow to Kyiv, where he will meet Ukrainian Energy Minister Dr Herman Halushchenko and the CEO of Naftogaz Yuriy Vitrenko.

The creation of the position of the Special Commissioner is based on the ‘Joint Statement of the United States and Germany on Support for Ukraine, European Energy Security, and our Climate Goals’ that was released by the Federal Government and the Government of the United States of America on 21 July 2021. Its goal is to preserve Ukraine’s role as a transit country for gas after 31 December 2024, the day the current transit contract ends.

The Federal Government renewed its appointment of Georg Graf Waldersee as its Special Commissioner for Gas Transit through Ukraine on 18 August 2021. Georg Graf Waldersee had already taken part in that role in the trilateral talks that were held in 2019.
