Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier is attending the 2nd meeting of the Energy Ministers of the Länder today. The items on the agenda include the planned expansion of the electricity grids, renewable energies and the promotion of their use, and the progress that has been made by the Growth, Structural Change and Regional Development Commission (Commission on Coal)(in German). The heating transition will be another important topic to be discussed.

Federal Minister Altmaier said: "I am delighted to join the Energy Ministers of the Länder at their meeting today. The Federal Government and the Länder governments need to pull in the same direction to accelerate the grid expansion. We have already demonstrated that we are able to do so at the Grid Summit that took place in September at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. On this occasion, we agreed on a package of measures on the grid expansion. The next step is to implement these measures because reliable, modern electricity grids are necessary for a successful energy transition and for successful industrial countries like Germany."

This year, Federal Minister Altmaier has already undertaken two visits to regions affected by the grid expansion in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, and in Thuringia and Bavaria. A third visit is planned to take place at the beginning of next year. The revision of the Grid Expansion Acceleration Act for the Transmission Grid (NABEG) as part of the package of measures is expected to be adopted soon by the Federal Cabinet.
