Economic Affairs Minister Peter Altmaier is welcoming today Ms Doris Leuthard, member of the Swiss Federal Council and head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC).

The talks will focus on energy-policy issues. The exchange of views will also include the countries' reaching of the climate targets, current issues regarding the electricity market design and grid expansion, and a possible future electricity market agreement between the EU and Switzerland. Internet governance will be a further issue. In 2019, the UN Internet Governance Forum, the world's most important platform to discuss the future of the internet, will take place in Berlin. In 2017, the UN Internet Governance Forum took place in Geneva.

Switzerland has for many years ranked among Germany's ten most important trading partners. In 2017, the trade volume totalled approximately €100 billion, with Germany being by far Switzerland's most important trading partner with a 23% share of Swiss foreign trade.

Switzerland is one of the most important foreign direct investors in Germany; its investments amount to around €39 billion.
