From Wednesday, 25 April 2018, the 2018 ILA Berlin Air Show will be held under the motto ‘innovation and leadership in aerospace’. The ILA is the most important showcase event for the German aerospace industry and the world’s longest-standing air show.

On 25 April 2018, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier will visit the ILA. He will tour the grounds of the show to stop at several stands, including the joint stand of ILA partner country France and the German Aerospace Center – which is the largest engineering research institute within Europe – and the ILA Space Pavilion.

Federal Minister Altmaier said: “Aerospace is an industry that allows Germany to develop pioneering innovation. The industry has seen global success, with an export ratio that has stayed above 70% over many years. Innovation is everything – that applies to all sectors, but is particularly true for aerospace. The industry needs to continue to invest in research and development. And the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, too, will continue to provide funding for cutting-edge technology through the German Aviation Research Programme, for which the next call will be made this autumn. We are placing a particular focus on digital innovation, unmanned aerial systems and environmental performance.”

On the same day, Federal Government Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy, Thomas Jarzombek, will open the International Supplier Center, the ILA Future Lab and ILA Space Day. He will also join the award ceremony for the Innovation Award of German Aviation. On 26 April, Mr Jarzombek will speak at the conference for the EU’s Clean Sky research programme:

Mr Jarzombek said: “Aerospace is a high-tech sector that has the potential to drive forward our economies and societies. Digital innovation, metal additive manufacturing and connected mobility have become integral parts of the industry. I am looking forward to starting my new role as Federal Government Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy by visiting the ILA, which is the most important showcase for the aerospace sector in Germany.”

On the eve of the ILA, the Berlin Aviation Summit – the accompanying conference for the show – was held for the first time. The summit was opened by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy’s Parliamentary State Secretary Oliver Wittke. He also signed a joint declaration of intent on closer cooperation in aviation research with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). In addition to this, Parliamentary State Secretary Oliver Wittke will visit the Berlin Air Show on Wednesday, 25 April, for a tour of the show grounds.

On the first day of the ILA, the traditional Airbus Ministerial Meeting will also be held. This meeting will bring together delegations from Germany, France, Spain and the UK with members from the top management of Airbus to discuss current projects and issues the company is facing. It will be chaired by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

At this year’s ILA, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy will have its own stand within the new ILA future lab. The Ministry will present exhibits from its funding programmes highlighting key issues that the sector will be facing in the future, with a particular focus being placed on digital innovation, sustainability, disruption, and ‘space for earth’. Germany Trade and Invest, which made its premier at the ILA in 2016, will once again be present at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy’s stand and provide advice to investors looking to invest in Germany.
