Practical example and current challenges
- The work processes in the aerospace environment along the entire product life cycle of an air-craft or spacecraft (e.g. aircraft, satellite or lander) must become more digital and thus more competitive in the long term. To this end, it is necessary, for example, to link existing processes with virtual or augmented reality (AR/VR) technology and real-time simulations in order to view and evaluate aerospace engineering options in a safe, virtual environment in the shortest possi-ble time.
- What is the problem now? Existing firewalls, internal software usage rules, data formats, regula-tions, rights and provisions do not allow for optimal data exchange. Even within an institution, whether small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), large companies or research institutions, the various data cannot be sufficiently combined, exchanged or aggregated.
- Which industry requirements can be supported by the DASCLab collaborative platform in the future? In the industry, there is a need to reduce existing barriers to collaboration within a con-sortium. Likewise, the handling of access and utilisation rights of data, as well as their derived work results, represent a decisive hurdle. A further challenge lies in the provision and linking of data from inhomogeneous IT systems with the most diverse interfaces and formats of the indi-vidual actors. At the same time, data sovereignty must be maintained along the entire product life cycle. Another goal is to create and establish comprehensive working environments and pro-cesses. In addition to an integrated engineering environment, these also require the integration of intelligent digital assistants for optimisation, diagnosis, modelling and simulation. In particular, AI methods and virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR) applications are to be used.
- Where does the project currently stand? Currently, DASCLab offers the possibility for interested parties to receive information about the different projects and activities and to get in contact with other actors. In a next step, the first ideas will be implemented, and a physical digital labor-atory will be set up for testing and demonstration purposes.
What added value does the "GAIA-X project" offer?
- Considering the GAIA-X concept, it is planned to provide a dedicated collaborative cloud-based platform for aerospace stakeholders. This should create new networking opportunities with other GAIA-X use cases and hubs within Germany and Europe. The secure exchange of information and data via the future GAIA-X infrastructures will open up new opportunities for cooperation and business fields that do not currently exist in this form.
- GAIA-X will provide the following added values for aerospace use cases: Data sovereignty, au-thorisation and data usage control, uniform protection classes and semantics, creation of legally compliant agreements and IPR, identity management, security concepts and security manage-ment systems. Cybersecurity is indispensable for effectively countering cyber threats and will play a key role in the DASClab's development process.
- GAIA-X can offer a solution to the challenges described and thus increase the competitiveness of both sectors. An own individual implementation, without the GAIA-X initiative, would be very personnel-, time- and cost-intensive.
- GAIA-X can enable the rapid development and expansion of new services in aerospace at the European level. The use of the platform will be attractive for all actors, since especially in aero-space a high level of security must be implemented with regard to data transfer, property rights, redundancies, etc. SMEs often do not have the capacities to implement the required specifica-tions of large companies and national and international authorities. DASClab aims to lower the barriers to entry in the future and create secure collaboration opportunities for SMEs at regional, national and European level.
