Brigitte Zypries, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, visited Beijing from 12 to 15 May 2017. At the invitation of the Chinese government she attended the High-Level Dialogue of the Belt and Road Forum. Ms Zypries attended on behalf of the Federal Chancellor. She met with high-ranking officials, including President Xi Jinping. Minister Zypries also met with young entrepreneurs.

Speaking before the visit, Ms Zypries said: "I welcome China's efforts to use the 'Belt and Road Initiative' to expand the existing infrastructure of the countries involved in a way that benefits the economies. We know that China has recently spoken out in favour of free trade and against protectionism. In the light of this development, I will be advocating open markets, equal treatment for foreign companies, and the removal of the barriers to trade and investment that still exist."
