The President of the European Parliament, Mr Antonio Tajani, and the Commissioner for Industry, Ms Elżbieta Bieńkowska, yesterday expressed their support for a new EU industrial strategy.

Economic Affairs Minister Brigitte Zypries said: "We have been calling for a stronger role for industrial policy in the EU for a long time. In Germany and in Europe, industry guarantees many millions of well-paid jobs, highly qualified workers and high-quality products. Our industries are facing challenges such as the digital transformation and a changing global environment. We need to take specific measures in order to lastingly strengthen the competitiveness of industry. This applies in particular to digitalisation, and investment and innovation promotion. And we need a trade policy that advocates free and fair global markets. Therefore I expressly welcome the fact that the President of the European Parliament, Mr Antonio Tajani, and the Commissioner for Industry, Ms Elżbieta Bieńkowska, have announced that they support a new EU industrial strategy. I regard this as a clear commitment to Europe as an industrial base. We will actively contribute to the elaboration of the strategy."

The issue of industrial policy in Europe will also play an important role at this year's Hannover Messe trade fair, which officially starts on 24 April. Furthermore, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has invited the European Friends of Industry to Berlin for their 5th conference in June 2017. The ministerial conference of the Friends of Industry comprises 21 European ministers in charge of economic affairs. It was initiated by France in 2013 and will take place for the fifth time this year. This year's conference will also focus on "Europe and its industries".
