Federal Minister Brigitte Zypries awards prizes to digital start-ups at CeBIT

Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Brigitte Zypries today awarded prizes to winners of the new “Digital Innovations Start-up Competition” at the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover. In addition to launch capital for their own start-up, the prize-winners receive tailored coaching and mentoring.

Federal Minister Brigitte Zypries said: “We want more young people, and young women in particular, to use their innovative ideas to found new companies, develop new markets and create jobs. On top of having a good idea, they also need courage and stamina. Because these start-ups are important for Germany’s economy, we have many instruments, such as the “Digital Innovations Start-up Competition”, to support this. We need their innovative potential so that we can continue to keep pace with other countries. We are therefore working to remove impediments to growth and bureaucratic barriers affecting start-ups.”

The top prizes went to the following teams:

  • AkknaTek from Saarbrücken has developed a precise measuring technique to position lenses in cataract operations.
  • The Berlin-based CellCore3D start-up team has developed a software module for the simple manufacture of lightweight components in line with bionic structural principles, i.e. principles derived from natural structures.
  • The compLIFE software from COMPREDICT from the Frankfurt / Rhine-Main region monitors the wear-and-tear of vehicle parts whilst the vehicle is being driven, and derives their residual lifetime from this.
  • InnoCow from Kaiserslautern has developed a neckband equipped with sensors to automatically measure activity and vital parameters of cows.
  • The Chemnitz-based NAVENTIK team offers software for precise environmental recognition for the navigation of autonomous cars in urban areas. The software recognises sources of errors, analyses them and compensates for them.
  • The Physec pair from Bochum have developed the IoTree platform, which enables retailers to easily digitise objects and link them securely with the Internet of Things. Physec provides software for secure encryption for the communicating objects.

COMPREDICT received two awards. In addition to the main prize, the start-up was also awarded the special “Big Data” prize for its evaluation of real-time data on the wear-and-tear of car parts. The Berlin-based dataX Academy start-up was awarded the special “Digital Education” prize. The online teaching platform offers training for people in work who wish to learn how to use big data analytical software.

A total of 306 start-up teams with 769 participants submitted entries. Six teams won top prizes worth €32,000 each, two teams won special “Digital Education” and “Big Data” prizes worth €10,000 each, and 13 other teams won prizes worth €7,000 each. In addition to launch capital for their own start-up, the prize-winning teams receive tailored coaching and mentoring.
