The National Metrology Institute (PTB) is responsible for ensuring a high level of accuracy in measurements of physical parameters (e.g. time, mass, radiation), for testing and approving the design of measuring devices (e.g. scales, petrol pumps, radar traffic speed meters) and for conducting research in the area of measurement technology. In so doing, it makes an important contribution to the protection of consumers. In 2002, the PTB was evaluated by an international commission comprised of eleven specialists with respect to the scope and quality of its work.
