The G8 Summit 2008 in Toyako
The G8 Summit in Toyako maintained continuity with last year's summit in Heiligendamm by focusing on the following key issues:
- world economy
- environment and climate change
- development and Africa
- foreign and security policy
In addition, against the background of the global rise in food prices, the G8 states adopted a separate statement on global food security.
World economy
The issue of rising oil prices stood at the centre of discussions on the global economy. The measures that were adopted focus on intensifying the dialogue between consumers and producers, increasing energy efficiency, improving transparency and investigating price formation on the oil markets. Despite the current crises on financial markets and a public sphere that is increasingly critical of globalisation processes, the G8 countries reaffirmed their positive commitment to open markets and the free movement of capital. While international organisations play an increasingly crucial role in key policy areas, they need to engage in closer cooperation on issues of central importance to the global economy.
