Shaping an effective policy framework for foreign trade and investment:

  • The German government will serve as a driving force in efforts to reach an accord in the Doha Round before the end of this year.
  • Investment at the international level is possible only when intellectual property is effectively protected. Germany will push for the conclusion of negotiations on a plurilateral agreement to combat piracy and counterfeiting (the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, ACTA) likewise before the end of this year.
  • It is essential to improve market access in key growth regions in Asia and Latin America by concluding targeted bilateral free trade agreements. For this reason, the German government will work to achieve the swift signing and ratification of the EU's free trade agreement with South Korea, for example. In addition, we view the launching of free trade negotiations with Singapore as an important stepping stone for entering into negotiations with additional ASEAN countries. The German government will also work actively to achieve rapid progress in negotiations with India, Canada and other countries.
