Go West: The first six IT start-ups are headed for Silicon Valley from January 2012

Second round of applications launched for 2012

A committee of eight experts has selected the first six start-ups to participate in the German Silicon Valley Accelerator programme (GSVA), which the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology uses to support young German IT firms in Silicon Valley in the U.S. They will be spending three months from January (or April) 2012 learning about the U.S. market and the opportunities it offers for growth.

Ernst Burgbacher, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, said: "The German Silicon Valley Accelerator offers the six start-ups selected the opportunity to draw inspiration from the spirit of entrepreneurship in one of the world's leading high-tech regions. This will enable them to establish valuable contacts with potential customers and partners in the U.S. at an early stage of their corporate development. The companies selected stand for "Innovation made in Germany". They can benefit greatly from their time in Silicon Valley. And this will also be of benefit to business in Germany in general."

The six companies are: Fair Observer UG (Munich), Friendsurance / Alecto GmbH (Berlin), Nelou / gmbh (Berlin), Pixray GmbH (Potsdam), Signavio GmbH (Berlin), Trifense GmbH (Velten).

The German Silicon Valley Accelerator is a programme to support the establishment of a German national pavilion at the Plug & Play Techcenter in Sunnyvale, California, and will host up to four companies a quarter in Silicon Valley over the coming three years. The link between the Economics Ministry's GVSA programme and its EXIST programme will be relaxed from 2012. This means that in future it will be open to all start-ups from the information and communications sector which pursue a promising strategy for growth and internationalisation.

Interested young IT firms which commenced business not more than three years ago have until 1 March 2012 to apply to spend a period at the GSVA in the second half of 2012.
